Syphilis

Symptoms

Many people do not have symptoms for years. Symptoms may include a single sore (can also be multiple sores). Other symptoms may include a skin rash, rough, red or brown spots on palms of hands and bottoms of feet, fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and fatigue. There are also more serious symptoms that occur in people who have had syphilis for many years. Talk to a health care provider if you would like to learn about these symptoms.

How it’s Spread

Syphilis is spread though direct contact with a sore on an infected person

It can be spread during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

It can also be spread from a mother to her child while she is pregnant.

Treatment

Syphilis can be cured in the early stages with penicillin (or other antibiotics for those allergic to penicillin).

Treatment will kill the syphilis bacterium and prevent further damage, but it will not repair damage already done.
