HPV and Warts

Symptoms

Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms. Sometimes, certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in men and women. Symptoms may include small bumps or groups of bumps in the genital area. Other types of HPV can cause cervical cancer and other less common types of cancer such as, cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus and penis. People with cancer usually do not show symptoms until it is advanced. Talk to a health care provider if you would like to learn about these symptoms.

How it’s Spread

HPV can be spread during vaginal or anal sex.

Although it is rare, HPV can also be passed from mother to baby during vaginal birth.

Treatment

There is no treatment for the HPV virus. A healthy immune system can usually fight off HPV.

Genital warts caused by HPV can be removed by medications or from treatments by a health care provider.

Sexually active women should get yearly pap smears to be screened for HPV and cervical cancer.
